Project: Herbal Medicine and Self-Determination: the necessity of creating healing spaces for young people

Lalee Simeso is of Oromo decent, grew up in a few countries and is now living in Oakland. She is an educator who is dedicated to cultivate the relationship between youth development, voice, and wellness.

She came up with her project idea last year while doing a year-long herbal program in Oakland. While participating in this course, Lalee was simultaneously coordinating a high school leadership program and noticed her students were curious, and had many questions about the plants that were introduced to them. During a youth summit, She co-led a plant medicine workshop, which was inspiration to continue to incorporate herbal medicine in her work with young people.

Lalee will host and facilitate workshops that connect herbal medicine making, leadership development and creative activities for girls, gender non-conforming and trans youth who’ve been formerly incarcerated. She hopes to co-curate an intentional space to share the ways in which plants can support young people's overall well-being and agency.
