Project: Using Home Visits to Build Trusting Relationships Between Teachers, Students and Families
An immigrant from Michoacan, Mexico, Christian attended Oakland public schools. Confronted with immigration and family health issues, he felt his teachers didn’t appreciate the many problems faced by young people like him. “I reflected on my journey through public education and wondered what difference would have been made if my teachers had cared and visited my home, seeing both my struggle and my potential.”
During the 2014-15 school year, Christian will use his award to organize and conduct teacher home visits to families of 6th grade students at Oakland's Epic Middle School. Goals include increasing teachers' understanding of students' home lives to build family-school trust, producing better academic performance and more satisfied students, teachers and families.
