Ahzha McFadden
San Mateo County
Project: Menlo-Atherton Ecology Research Outdoors Science Program
Currently in her second year teaching at Menlo-Atherton High School, Ahzha teaches 9th grade World History and Limited English Proficiency History. She studied History and International Studies at the University of Oregon and received her Masters in Secondary Education at Lewis and Clark College. She is bilingual in Spanish and English, which allows her to connect with students, as the majority of them speak Spanish as a first language.
She is an advocate for immigrants. Besides teaching, she also supports the Dreamers Club at Menlo-Atherton by attending meetings and community events. She has been a member of Stanford Sanctuary Now, a group dedicated to making the Stanford campus into a sanctuary school for immigrants. She is an outspoken advocate for effective and fair immigration policy and immigrants rights in the United States.
Every day, Ahzha strives to be a person whom her students can count on to support them and push them to reach their full potential. She believes in academic optimism for all students, and in pushing each of her students to be activists for themselves and their communities.
Ahzha is expanding an after school science program (that she started last year) aiming to provide a fun and supportive community for high school English Language Learners and help them develop the academic and communication skills needed to excel in high school and beyond.
